Cleansing is the housekeeping of magickal practice. In Wiccan tradition you cleanse before ritual, after an argument, when moving into a new home, when you bring new tools into your practice, or whenever a space simply feels heavy. Methods include salt, water, smoke, sound and fresh air, and the best choice depends on what you are clearing. Cleansing is neutral and gentle: it lifts away what has built up so you can start fresh, and it is often followed by protection or blessing work. A quick tidy and open windows make any cleansing work better.

A simple room cleansing wash
- On a Monday during the waning gibbous moon, tidy the room and open a window. Set a white candle in a sturdy holder on a heat-safe surface and light it.
- Fill a bowl with water, stir in a pinch of salt and a few sprigs of dried hyssop, and add two drops of lemon oil.
- Dip your fingertips and flick a few drops toward each corner, moving counterclockwise. Say, "Only what serves this home may stay." Wash your hands afterward.
- Keep the selenite dry, since it dissolves in water. Instead, sweep it slowly through the air in each corner, picturing the room filling with clear white light.
- Pour the water outside or down the drain, then snuff the candle before leaving the room. Place the selenite on a windowsill to keep the space feeling fresh.
Tip: Lemon oil can make skin sensitive to sunlight, so keep the water off your skin and rinse if splashed.
