History and folklore
Shungite comes almost entirely from one place, the area around the village of Shunga near Lake Onega in Russian Karelia, which gave the stone its name. It is unusual because it is made mostly of carbon and is very old. Local folklore spoke of springs near the deposits with special virtues, and Peter the Great is said to have set up a spa there. Today witches use it as a grounding, protective stone, especially for homes and busy workspaces.
