History and folklore
Algiz is one of the hardest runes to pin down. The Old English rune poem calls it eolhx, elk-sedge, a marsh grass that cuts any hand that grabs it, and scholars debate whether the original name meant elk or protection. Its later Norse form became the rune for man. Much of its meaning today is modern interpretation of these sources. Most readers treat Algiz as protection, connection to the divine and the instinct to stay alert.
