The Witch's Cabinet · Candle Colors

White Candle Meaning and magickal uses

The all-purpose candle for cleansing, peace, protection and any intention at all.

Intentions
Cleansing, Peace, Protection
Element
Spirit
Planet
The Moon
Day
Monday
Best for
Cleansing, peace, blessing, any intention

How to use it

  • Stand-in for any color

If you do not have the color a spell calls for, light a white candle and simply say what color energy you are inviting. Your clear intention matters far more than the dye.

  • Cleanse a room

Carry a lit white candle in a jar slowly through each room, pausing in corners. Open a window as you go, and picture stale energy leaving with the fresh air.

  • Daily altar light

Light a white candle at the start of your daily practice as a simple way to say you are present. Snuff it when you finish to mark the end of sacred time.

Works well with

  • Spirit
  • The Moon
  • Full Moon
  • Clear Quartz
  • Selenite

Substitutes

  • Silver Candle
  • Gray Candle

History and folklore

White holds all the colors of light, which is why witches traditionally treat a white candle as a universal substitute. It is linked with purity, peace, truth and new starts, and with the full moon shining bright. In folklore, white candles were lit for blessings, births and to watch over the sick or the dead. In Wiccan practice white is often the first candle a new witch buys and the one they use most. When in doubt, choose white and let your intention give it direction.
