Safety: Water-soluble: never wash or soak it, and do not make elixirs with it. Very soft and may shed fine dust; wash hands after handling raw pieces.

How to use it

  • Cleanse your stones

Rest crystals on a selenite plate overnight, or lay a wand beside them. Many witches use this as a gentle, dry alternative to smoke or water.

  • Sweep your energy

Pass a selenite wand slowly a few inches from your body, head to feet, imagining it smoothing away the day's static. Finish with a slow breath.

  • Bring calm to a room

Set a selenite tower in a bedroom or meditation corner. Let its soft glow remind you of moonlight, and pause beside it for a quiet breath whenever you pass by.

History and folklore

Selenite is a clear form of the mineral gypsum, and its name comes from the Greek selene, the moon, for its soft pearly glow. Some of the largest natural crystals in the world are selenite beams in Mexico's Cave of the Crystals. Traditionally, thin sheets of gypsum were used as window glass in parts of the ancient world. Modern witches prize selenite as a gentle cleanser for spaces and stones, a little piece of moonlight to keep on the altar.
