History and folklore
Air is one of the four classical elements, the invisible force of breath, wind and sky. Many ancient cultures linked breath with life and spirit itself. In Wiccan circles Air is called in the East, where the sun rises, and it belongs to dawn and spring. It rules thought, speech, learning and inspiration. On the altar it is often shown by incense or feathers, and in many traditions by the athame, the ritual blade, though some traditions assign the wand here instead.
