Safety: Toxic to cats, dogs and horses (ASPCA list), mostly causing stomach upset. Fine in normal cooking amounts for people. Oregano essential oil is hot and a strong skin irritant: never swallow it, dilute it heavily for skin, keep it away from pets, and avoid it during pregnancy and while breastfeeding.

How to use it

  • Happy home

Hang a small bundle of dried oregano in the kitchen and say a simple blessing for joy and harmony each time you pass it while cooking.

  • Let go

Sprinkle a pinch of oregano into a candle dish when you are grieving or ending something. Light the candle and let the warm scent hold space for release.

  • Love in the pot

Add oregano to a shared meal with family or a partner while you stir clockwise and focus on easy, cheerful closeness at the table and in the days that follow.

History and folklore

The name oregano comes from Greek words often translated as joy of the mountains. In ancient Greece and Rome, wedding couples were crowned with oregano or marjoram for happiness, and folklore says the herb growing on a grave meant the departed was at peace. Over time it became a staple of Mediterranean cooking. In magick it keeps that bright, comforting reputation, lending joy, ease and protection to the home and helping the heart let go of sadness.
