Safety: Fresh nettle stings and is a skin irritant: wear gloves to handle it. Drying or cooking removes the sting. Keep pets away from fresh plants, since they can be stung too. Ask a healthcare provider before drinking nettle tea or using it as a supplement during pregnancy or while breastfeeding.

How to use it

  • Protection jar

Fill a jar with dried nettle, salt and a few iron nails, then seal it and keep it near your front door to guard your home against unwanted influence.

  • Send it back

Sprinkle dried nettle around a black candle and focus on returning negativity to where it came from, without wishing anyone harm. Let the candle burn safely.

  • Strength sachet

Carry a little dried nettle when you need to set firm boundaries. Like the plant, you can be useful and kind while still protecting yourself.

Works well with

  • Black Candle
  • Black Tourmaline
  • Hematite
  • ♂︎Tuesday
  • Thurisaz

Substitutes

  • Rue
  • Garlic

History and folklore

Nettle has been with people for a very long time. Its tough fibers were woven into cloth across Europe, and the fairy tale of the wild swans has a sister weaving nettle shirts to break a curse. In Anglo-Saxon tradition it was one of nine sacred herbs. Folk custom held that carrying nettle protected against harm and that it could turn ill wishes back on the sender. It reminds witches that protection can grow quietly at the edge of any path.
