The Witch's Cabinet · Spell kit

Banishing Magick, spell kit and correspondences

Releasing unwanted habits, patterns and energy so you can move forward freely.

Banishing magick removes what no longer belongs in your life: a bad habit, a cycle of worry, lingering heavy energy in a home, or the hold an old situation still has on you. In Wiccan practice it is closely tied to the waning moon, when energy naturally recedes. The ethics are simple and firm. You banish habits, patterns and energy, never people, and you never aim to harm anyone. If someone in your life is causing trouble, banish their influence over you and set real-world boundaries. Follow banishing work with something positive to fill the space you have cleared.

Your banishing spell kit

Candle colorBlack CandleA protective color for banishing, absorbing negativity and closing chapters.CrystalObsidianA volcanic glass for protection, honest reflection, and cutting away what no longer serves.HerbBlack PepperA sharp, fiery spice for protection, banishing and clearing away envy.Oil or incenseMyrrhA deep, bittersweet resin for protection, healing work and honoring the dead.Moon phaseWaning CrescentThe final thin sliver, for rest, surrender, healing and quiet endings.Day♄︎SaturdaySaturn's day, for protection, banishing, boundaries, discipline and endings.

A simple habit-releasing spell

  1. On a Saturday during the waning crescent, set a black candle in a sturdy holder on a heat-safe surface, with your obsidian and a bowl of water nearby.
  2. On a slip of paper, write the habit or pattern you are releasing, such as "Putting myself last." Name a behavior or feeling, never a person.
  3. Rub a drop of diluted myrrh oil onto the candle, then light it. Sprinkle a pinch of black pepper over the paper and fold it away from you.
  4. Hold the obsidian and say, "I release this. It has no hold on me." Tear the paper into small pieces and drop them into the water.
  5. Snuff the candle when finished rather than leaving it burning. Pour the water away outside or down the drain, and throw the paper scraps in the trash.

Tip: Choose a small new habit to begin the next morning so the space you cleared fills with something good.
