History and folklore

Holly's glossy green leaves and red berries brighten the winter woods, so it has been brought into homes at midwinter since Roman Saturnalia. Celtic and British folklore held that holly guarded against lightning and mischievous spirits, and it was considered unlucky to cut down a holly tree. In modern Pagan lore the Holly King rules the waning year from Midsummer to Yule. Witches use holly for protection, luck and the courage to face the dark.
