How to use it

  • Boundary charm

Place a few fallen blackthorn twigs with thorns along a windowsill or in a protection jar while you state firm boundaries for your home. Handle it with gloves.

  • Waning moon banishing

On a waning moon, write what you want to remove on paper, wrap it around a thorny twig and bury it away from your home.

  • Courage for hard seasons

Keep a short blackthorn stick on your altar during a difficult time as a reminder that you can stay strong through bitter weather. Hold it when you need resolve.

History and folklore

Blackthorn blooms white on bare black branches in early spring, often during a cold snap that country people called a blackthorn winter. Its wicked thorns made it a hedge plant for keeping livestock in and intruders out. In Irish tradition the shillelagh walking stick was often made of blackthorn, and in folklore the tree was linked to fate, curses and the dark half of the year. Witches use blackthorn for strong protection, boundaries and banishing.
