History and folklore
Mars glows a rusty red in the night sky, and ancient peoples named it for gods of war: Nergal in Babylon, Ares in Greece and Mars in Rome. The Roman Mars was also a guardian of fields and boundaries. Its metal is iron, the stuff of weapons and tools, and, fittingly, the planet's red color comes from iron oxide dust. Astrologers link Mars with energy, courage and desire. Witches call on it for protection, motivation and the strength to act.
