The Witch's Cabinet · Oils, Resins and Incense

Dragon's Blood Meaning and magickal uses

Also called Dragon's blood resin, Dracaena resin, Daemonorops

A deep red resin that adds strength and fire to protection and love work.

Intentions
Protection, Banishing, Love, Confidence
Element
Fire
Planet
Mars
Zodiac
Aries, Scorpio
Day
Tuesday
Parts used
Red resin from palm fruit or Dracaena trees
Scent
Warm, sweet, slightly spicy when burned
Safety: Never swallow the resin. It stains skin, cloth and altar tops. Many "dragon's blood" oils and sticks are synthetic fragrance, so read labels and patch test before skin contact. When burning, ventilate the room and keep pets away from the smoke.

How to use it

  • Boost a blend

Add a small pinch of powdered dragon's blood to any incense mix. Traditionally it is said to strengthen the other ingredients, much like turning up the volume on your intention.

  • Banishing smoke

Burn a few grains on charcoal while you open a window and ask unwanted energy to leave. Finish by closing the window and lighting a white candle.

  • Red ink for spells

Dissolve a little resin in alcohol to make a traditional red ink for writing sigils or petitions. Store it labeled and out of reach of children and pets.

Works well with

  • Red Candle
  • ♂︎Tuesday
  • Mars
  • Garnet
  • Thurisaz

Substitutes

  • Frankincense
  • Copal
  • Cinnamon Leaf

History and folklore

Dragon's blood is a name given to several red resins: from the rattan palm of Southeast Asia, from Dracaena trees of the Canary Islands and Socotra, and from Croton trees in South America. Ancient Greeks and Romans used it as a dye and varnish, and in folklore its color was said to come from the blood of fighting dragons and elephants. In folk magick and modern witchcraft it became a beloved booster resin for protection, courage and love spells.
