Aries Meaning and magickal uses

The first sign, a cardinal fire of courage, drive and fresh starts.

• Intentions: Confidence, New Beginnings, Protection
• Element: Fire
• Planet: Mars
• Day: Tuesday
• Dates: March 21 - April 19
• Modality: Cardinal

How to use it

• Work in its season. While the sun moves through Aries, from late March to mid April, set intentions for new projects and brave first steps. Light a red candle on a Tuesday and name one thing you will begin.
• Borrow its courage. When you need nerve for a hard conversation or a first attempt, hold a carnelian and picture the ram lowering its horns and pushing forward. Breathe in steady heat, then take the first small step.

Works well with: Red Candle, Carnelian, Cinnamon, Tuesday, Ostara

Folklore

Aries the Ram opens the zodiac because the sun enters it at the spring equinox, the old start of the astrological year. Greek myth links the constellation to the golden-fleeced ram that carried Phrixus to safety, whose fleece later drew Jason and the Argonauts. Astrologers traditionally give Aries to Mars, the planet of drive and conflict, and witches often time spells for courage, action and new starts to its season. Its lesson is to begin, then learn to finish.
