History and folklore

Fire agate forms in volcanic areas of Mexico and the American Southwest, where thin layers of iron oxide settled between layers of chalcedony. Light bouncing between those layers creates its rainbow flashes, so stones are carefully carved by hand to reveal the color. As an agate it inherits the old reputation of agates as protective stones, worn since antiquity. In modern practice its inner fire makes it a favorite for courage, passion and protecting the hearth and home.
