History and folklore
Ostara is a modern name for the spring equinox, when day and night are equal and the light begins to lengthen. It comes from Eostre, a goddess the English monk Bede mentioned in the eighth century as giving her name to an April month; little else is known about her. Jacob Grimm later suggested a German form, Ostara. Eggs and hares are old spring symbols, and modern witches celebrate the season with planting, balance and fresh growth.
