History and folklore
Birch is one of the first trees to grow back after fire or ice, which made it a natural symbol of beginnings. It is the first tree in the Irish Ogham alphabet, and the rune Berkano is named for it. In Scandinavia and Russia, birch twigs are used in the sauna to refresh the skin, and in Britain birch rods were said to drive out evil spirits. Witches use birch for cleansing, protection and fresh starts.
