The Witch's Cabinet · Oils, Resins and Incense

Pine Meaning and magickal uses

Also called Scots pine, Pine needle oil

A fresh, evergreen oil for cleansing, renewal and steady prosperity.

Intentions
Cleansing, Prosperity, Protection, Healing
Element
Air
Planet
Mars
Day
Tuesday
Parts used
Needles and twigs, steam-distilled oil
Scent
Crisp, green, resinous forest
Safety: Never swallow essential oils. Always dilute before skin contact (about 1-2 drops per teaspoon of carrier oil) and patch test first. Keep away from pets, especially cats, and out of reach of children. Pine oil is toxic to cats and dogs, so do not diffuse it near them. Old, oxidized pine oil irritates skin.

How to use it

  • Yule refresh

Diffuse a drop or two of pine at Yule, in a ventilated room away from pets, to bring the green life of the forest into the darkest days.

  • Cleanse a space

Add a few drops to a bucket of water and wipe down floors and sills, imagining a fresh wind blowing through every corner of your home.

  • Money candle

Anoint a green candle with diluted pine oil and focus on steady, evergreen growth in your finances. Light it on a Tuesday or Thursday, write down one practical money goal, and keep the paper under the candle holder while it burns safely.

Works well with

  • Pine
  • Yule
  • Green Candle
  • Moss Agate
  • Air

Substitutes

  • Cypress
  • Juniper Berry
  • Cedarwood

History and folklore

Pines grow across the Northern Hemisphere and have long stood for life that endures through winter. Ancient Romans honored the god Attis with pine, and in European folk custom evergreen boughs brought into the home at midwinter promised that spring would return. Pine needles were stuffed into mattresses for freshness and burned to clear sickrooms. In witchcraft pine oil is used for cleansing, renewal and prosperity, especially at Yule.
