History and folklore
Lemongrass is a tropical grass from South and Southeast Asia, long used in the kitchens of Thailand, India and Vietnam. It traveled with traders to the Caribbean and the Americas. In folk magick there, particularly in hoodoo-influenced practice, lemongrass became a classic cleansing and road-opening herb, an ingredient in floor washes and in the well-known Van Van oil. Many practitioners traditionally use it to clear stagnant energy, encourage new beginnings and sharpen psychic awareness.

Safety: Listed by the ASPCA as toxic to dogs, cats and horses; keep plants and dried grass away from pets. Safe in normal cooking amounts for people, but avoid more than culinary amounts while pregnant or breastfeeding. The essential oil is a skin irritant: never swallow it, always dilute it, and keep it away from pets, cats especially.
