The Witch's Cabinet · Oils, Resins and Incense

Lemon Meaning and magickal uses

Also called Lemon oil, Citrus limon

A crisp citrus oil for cleansing, clarity and a fresh start.

Intentions
Cleansing, New Beginnings, Peace
Element
Water
Planet
The Moon
Day
Monday
Moon phase
New Moon
Parts used
Fruit peel, cold-pressed or distilled oil
Scent
Bright, sharp, zesty citrus
Safety: Never swallow essential oils. Always dilute before skin contact (about 1-2 drops per teaspoon of carrier oil) and patch test first. Keep away from pets, especially cats, and out of reach of children. Cold-pressed lemon oil is phototoxic: do not use it on skin that will see sun or tanning beds within 12 hours. Distilled lemon oil is not.

How to use it

  • Floor wash

Add a few drops to a bucket of water and wash floors from the back of the home toward the front door to sweep out stale energy at the start of a new season.

  • New moon refresh

Diffuse a couple of drops in a ventilated room, away from pets, on the new moon while you list what you want to begin this cycle.

  • Cleanse a crystal

Wave a tumbled stone over a dish of water with a drop of lemon oil and visualize it rinsed clean, without soaking stones that dislike water.

Works well with

  • New Moon
  • Yellow Candle
  • Citrine
  • Lemon Balm
  • ☽︎Monday

Substitutes

  • Grapefruit
  • Sweet Orange
  • Bergamot

History and folklore

Lemons probably began in northern India and Myanmar and spread through Persia and the Arab world to the Mediterranean in the Middle Ages. Sailors later carried them to prevent scurvy, and lemon juice and peel have long been used in home cleaning. In folk magick lemon is a purifier: its juice was used to wash charms and its peel to freshen rooms. Witches today use the oil to clear old energy and to start projects with a clean slate.
