History and folklore
Mercury is the smallest planet and the closest to the Sun, darting quickly across the sky, so ancient watchers named it for the swift messenger god, Hermes to the Greeks and Mercury to the Romans. He guided travelers, protected merchants and carried words between gods and people. Astrologers link the planet with thinking, speech, learning, trade and short journeys. Witches call on Mercury's energy for study, clear communication, business and travel, often on a Wednesday.
