Waning Gibbous
Parts used
Leaves, flowering tops
Safety: Avoid during pregnancy and while breastfeeding. Do not swallow it beyond the small amounts in old-fashioned candy; large amounts can affect heart rhythm and blood sugar. Keep it where cats, dogs and horses cannot chew it, since pets can react to plants that are not well studied.

How to use it

  • Clear mind pouch

Carry dried horehound with a fluorite in a yellow pouch while studying or making decisions. Folklore says it sharpens the mind, so touch it when your thoughts get cloudy.

  • Protection bundle

Tie dried horehound with rosemary and hang it in your home. Let it stand for a household that is guarded, clear-headed and free of lingering negativity.

  • Cleansing offering

Scatter a little horehound outdoors during the waning moon as you name a worry you want to release. Then turn and walk away without looking back, letting the wind carry it off.

Works well with

  • Yellow Candle
  • Fluorite
  • ☿︎Wednesday
  • Mercury
  • Ansuz

Substitutes

  • Hyssop
  • Garden Sage
  • Rosemary

History and folklore

Horehound is a woolly, gray-green herb in the mint family, native to Europe and the Mediterranean. Its name may come from Old English words meaning hoary or downy plant, and a popular but uncertain story links it to the Egyptian god Horus. It has long been made into bitter-sweet horehound candy. In magickal tradition it is a herb of protection, clear thinking and cleansing, and some witches add it to blessings for tools and sacred space.
