History and folklore
Fluorite gives its name to fluorescence, the glow some minerals show under ultraviolet light. It was used as a flux in metalworking, from the Latin fluere, to flow. In England, a banded purple fluorite called Blue John has been carved into vases and bowls since the eighteenth century, and Romans are said to have made drinking cups from fluorite. Modern witches use fluorite as a stone of mental order, clear focus, and protection against confusion.
