History and folklore
Sage's Latin name, Salvia, comes from salvere, to be well or to save, and Roman and medieval writers praised it as a herb for a long, healthy life. An old saying asks why anyone should die whose garden grows sage. In European folk magick it was linked to wisdom, long life and wishes. Garden sage is an easy, common herb for cleansing with smoke, and using it this way respects that white sage ceremonies belong to specific Indigenous traditions.
