History and folklore

Lapis lazuli has been mined in the mountains of Afghanistan for more than six thousand years. Ancient Egyptians carved it into scarabs and inlaid it in Tutankhamun's funeral mask, and Mesopotamians linked it to their gods. Ground into the pigment ultramarine, it colored the robes of the Virgin Mary in Renaissance paintings and was more costly than gold. Traditionally it was a stone of royalty and truth. Modern witches use it for wisdom, honest speech, and inner sight.
