History and folklore
Crazy lace agate comes from the deserts of Chihuahua in northern Mexico, where layers of chalcedony formed tight, twisting bands. Agates as a family are named after the Achates River in Sicily, where the ancient Greek writer Theophrastus said they were found. Agate amulets have been worn for protection and good cheer since antiquity. The crazy lace variety is a newer find, nicknamed the laughter stone for its playful look, and witches carry it to bring back lightness and humor.
