How to use it

  • Cleanse with smoke

Light the incense and carry the censer slowly around your space or pass a tool through the smoke. Picture the fragrance lifting away anything stale.

  • Mark the east

Set the censer in the east of your altar to stand for Air when you lay out your altar by the four directions.

  • Send prayers up

  • Sandalwood
  • Copal
  • Air

Substitutes

  • Feather
  • Cauldron

History and folklore

Burning resin to honor the gods is one of the oldest religious acts known; frankincense and myrrh were traded across Arabia and Egypt for thousands of years. Swinging censers fill churches with smoke to this day. In Wicca the censer represents Air, and its rising smoke makes the invisible movement of energy something you can actually see.
