History and folklore
Tanzanite was discovered in 1967 in the Merelani Hills near Mount Kilimanjaro, still the only place on Earth where it is mined. It is a blue form of the mineral zoisite. The jeweler Tiffany & Co. named it after Tanzania and helped make it famous, and in 2002 it was added as a birthstone for December. It shows different shades of blue and violet when turned. Being so new, its lore is modern, but witches have embraced it for intuition, wisdom, and clear, heartfelt speech.
