History and folklore
Anise was cultivated in ancient Egypt and Greece and was prized by the Romans, who baked it into spiced cakes served after feasts. In European folklore a sprig or a sachet of seeds placed by the bed was said to keep away nightmares, and the seeds were traditionally added to protective and purifying washes. Its sweet scent is often linked with youth and freshness. Modern witches keep anise in dream pillows and use it to purify sacred spaces before ritual.
