History and folklore

Linden trees (called lime trees in Britain, though they are not related to the citrus fruit) were sacred to Germanic and Slavic peoples. Villages gathered under the linden to dance, hold court and make promises, because no one was thought able to lie beneath it. In Greek myth Baucis, a loving wife, was turned into a linden at the end of her life so she could stand forever beside her husband. Witches use the tree for love, peace, protection and sleep.
