Safety: Never put eyebright tea, washes or any homemade preparation in your eyes; it can cause infection or injury. Avoid swallowing it while pregnant or breastfeeding. Keep it where cats, dogs and horses cannot chew it, since pets can react to plants that are not well studied.

How to use it

  • Clear sight pouch

Carry dried eyebright in a small yellow pouch when you need to see a situation honestly. Hold it and ask to notice what is true, even the parts you would rather not see.

  • Anoint your tools

Wipe your tarot cards' box, pendulum or crystal ball with a cloth dipped in cooled eyebright infusion before a reading. Never put any homemade preparation in or near your eyes.

  • Truth candle

Roll a yellow candle in a little dried eyebright before a decision. Light it on a Sunday, ask your question, and journal what comes to mind as it burns.

History and folklore

Eyebright is a tiny meadow plant whose white flowers have purple lines and a yellow spot, looking a little like a bloodshot eye. Under the old idea that a plant's shape shows its purpose, it became linked with the eyes and with clear sight. Its name Euphrasia comes from Euphrosyne, one of the Greek Graces, whose name means gladness. In folk magick eyebright is used to see clearly, to uncover truth and to sharpen psychic perception, always as an aid for insight rather than eyes.
