History and folklore
Perthro is the most mysterious rune. Its meaning is truly uncertain, since it appears only in the Old English rune poem, where peorth is something that brings play and laughter to bold warriors sitting together in the beer hall. Many scholars guess it was a dice cup or game piece. Modern readers, interpreting the poem, link Perthro to chance, fate, mystery and divination itself, which is why it is often called the rune of the unknown.
