History and folklore
Eihwaz means yew, an evergreen that can live for well over a thousand years and is often found in old churchyards. The Old English rune poem calls it rough-barked, firm in the earth, a keeper of fire held up by its roots. Eihwaz does not appear in the Norse rune poems, so much of its meaning comes from that one poem and modern interpretation. Readers see it as endurance, protection and the link between life and death.
