History and folklore

Spirit quartz comes from a small area in Mpumalanga, South Africa, and became known to collectors in the 1990s. Each point is covered in a crust of tiny crystals that grew in a second stage over the main one, giving it a prickly look that inspired the names cactus and porcupine quartz. The amethyst kind is the most common. Because it is a recent find, its lore is modern. Witches see its many little crystals as a picture of community, and use it for harmony, cleansing, and spiritual connection.
