History and folklore
Vervain was held sacred across the ancient world. Romans swept their altars with it and carried it as a sign of peace, and later writers linked it to the Druids, who were said to gather it at the rise of the Dog Star when neither sun nor moon was in the sky. Christian folklore claimed it grew on Calvary, giving it the name herb of grace. Over the centuries it became a classic witch's herb for blessing, purifying and protecting.
