Safety: Never swallow essential oils. Always dilute before skin contact (about 1-2 drops per teaspoon of carrier oil) and patch test first. Keep away from pets, especially cats, and out of reach of children.

How to use it

  • Calm confidence

Put a drop of petitgrain on a cotton ball in your pocket before an interview or a class. Breathe it in and remind yourself what you already know.

  • Clear the clutter

Diffuse a drop or two in a ventilated room, away from pets, while you tidy your altar or workspace and set a clear intention for it.

  • Sun candle

Anoint a yellow candle with diluted petitgrain on a Sunday when you need steady, quiet courage rather than a big burst of energy. Let it burn safely while you sit with your goal.

  • Yellow Candle
  • Tiger's Eye
  • ☉︎Sunday
  • Lemon Balm
  • Fire

Substitutes

  • Neroli
  • Bergamot

History and folklore

Petitgrain means little grain in French. The oil was first pressed from small, unripe bitter oranges, but it is now distilled from the leaves and twigs of the same tree that gives us neroli. It was a traditional ingredient in eau de Cologne and remains common in perfumery. Its scent sits between green leaf and citrus. Witches use it for calm self-assurance, mental clarity and gentle cleansing, and as an affordable cousin of neroli.
