The Witch's Cabinet · Altar Tools and Symbols

Salt Dish Meaning and magickal uses

Also called Salt bowl, Bowl of salt

A small dish of salt that stands for Earth and is used to cleanse and protect.

Try it in the Altar Builder

Intentions
Cleansing, Protection, Grounding
Element
Earth
Planet
Saturn
On the altar
North, or front center beside the water bowl
Holds
Sea salt or kosher salt
Safety: Salt can scratch or damage soft and porous stones such as selenite, opal, turquoise and malachite. Salt is harmful to pets and plants in large amounts, so do not leave it where animals can lick it.

How to use it

  • Make blessed water

Add three pinches of salt to your water bowl, stir clockwise and say a simple blessing. Sprinkle the salted water around your circle to cleanse it.

  • Draw a protective line

Sprinkle a thin line of salt across a windowsill or doorway to mark a boundary that unwanted energy cannot cross. Sweep it up after a few days.

  • Cleanse a crystal

Set a crystal on top of a dish of dry salt overnight to clear it. Do not bury porous or soft stones, and never use wet salt on them.

Works well with

  • Earth
  • Black Tourmaline
  • Rosemary
  • White Candle
  • Water Bowl

Substitutes

  • Pentacle

History and folklore

Salt was precious in the ancient world; Roman soldiers were sometimes paid with it, and it has long been used to preserve food and keep evil away. Folk customs throw spilled salt over the left shoulder and sprinkle it on doorsteps for protection. In Wicca the salt dish represents Earth and joins the water bowl to bless the circle.
