History and folklore
The five-pointed star is ancient; the Pythagoreans used it as a sign of health, and medieval Christians linked it with the five wounds of Christ. Renaissance magicians engraved pentacles as protective talismans. In Wicca the upright star in a circle shows the four elements crowned by Spirit, all held together. The altar pentacle became standard through Gardner's tradition and is the Earth tool among the four.
