Where the name comes from
Worm Moon is one of the traditional North American full moon names popularized by the Old Farmer's Almanac, which gathered them from Algonquin and other Native American sources and from colonial American usage. The name is usually explained by the thawing ground of March, when earthworms and other small creatures become active again and signs of life return to the soil. Other traditional names for this full moon include the Crow Moon, for the calls of crows at winter's end, the Sap Moon, for the season of tapping maple trees, and the Crust Moon, for snow that thaws by day and freezes into a crust by night.
Worm Moon magick
In the Northern Hemisphere the Worm Moon arrives near Ostara and the spring equinox, as light and dark come into balance. Its themes are awakening, renewal and preparation. The soil is softening, and so are you. This is a strong time for new beginnings, but the work is practical: loosening what has gone hard, clearing space and getting the ground ready before you plant. Use this full moon to restart a stalled practice, to refresh your goals, and to reconnect with your body after a long winter indoors. Earth magick fits beautifully now. Get your hands in real soil if you can.
Southern Hemisphere: In the Southern Hemisphere this full moon falls in early autumn, so focus on harvest, balance and gathering in rather than planting.
Correspondences
A simple Worm Moon seed-blessing ritual
- Fill a small pot with soil and set it on your altar with a green candle on a fire-safe dish beside it. Never leave a burning candle unattended.
- Rest a moss agate on the soil and set a cotton ball with one drop of vetiver oil nearby. Never swallow essential oils, and keep them away from pets.
- Light the candle and press your fingers into the soil. Name one habit or project you want to wake up this spring.
- Sprinkle a pinch of dried nettle over the soil as a symbol of resilience, then plant a few easy seeds such as basil or marigold.
- Snuff the candle when you are done. Water the pot and tend it through the spring as a living reminder of your intention.
