Where the name comes from
Beaver Moon is one of the traditional North American full moon names popularized by the Old Farmer's Almanac, which gathered them from Algonquin and other Native American sources and from colonial American usage. The name is usually explained in two ways: November was the time when beavers were busy finishing their lodges and storing food before the ponds froze, and it was also the season when beaver trapping took place in colonial North America. Another well-known traditional name for this full moon is the Frost Moon, for the hard frosts that settle in during November. Both names describe a time of steady, practical work before winter closes in.
Beaver Moon magick
In the Northern Hemisphere the Beaver Moon shines on bare branches and early frost. Its themes are home, security, diligence and grounding. The beaver is a patient builder, so this is a good full moon for strengthening your foundations: tidying your home, organizing your finances, mending what is broken and making sure you feel safe and supported for the winter. It also suits protection magick for the household. This is a practical, earthy moon. The most meaningful magick you do now may look like ordinary chores, done with care and intention.
Southern Hemisphere: In the Southern Hemisphere this is late spring, so focus on growth, creativity and building momentum toward summer instead.
Correspondences
A simple Beaver Moon home-blessing ritual
- Clean one room or corner of your home that has been neglected, giving it your full attention as an act of care.
- Set a brown candle on a fire-safe dish in that space and place a hematite in front of it. Never leave a burning candle unattended.
- Diffuse a few drops of cedarwood oil in a ventilated room, or simmer dried patchouli in water. Essential oils are never swallowed; dilute before skin contact and keep them away from pets.
- Light the candle and walk slowly through your home, naming each room and asking that it be safe, warm and well kept this winter.
- Return to the candle, hold the hematite and feel your feet on the floor. Snuff the candle and keep the stone by your front door.
