Where the name comes from
Strawberry Moon is one of the traditional North American full moon names popularized by the Old Farmer's Almanac, which gathered them from Algonquin and other Native American sources and from colonial American usage. The name refers to the short season in June when wild strawberries ripen and are ready to gather in much of North America. In European and English-language traditions this full moon has also been called the Rose Moon, for the roses blooming in early summer, and the Hot Moon, for the warmth of the season. These names share a sense of sweetness, ripeness and long, bright days.
Strawberry Moon magick
In the Northern Hemisphere the Strawberry Moon rises close to Litha, the summer solstice, when the sun is at its height and the days are longest. Its themes are love, sweetness, gratitude and celebration. This is a wonderful full moon for romance and friendship, for honoring what is already good in your life, and for sharing your abundance with others. It also supports confidence and joy. Like ripe berries, the good things of this season do not last forever, so the practice here is presence. Enjoy what you have while it is sweet, and give thanks for it fully.
Southern Hemisphere: In the Southern Hemisphere this full moon falls near the winter solstice, so focus on rest, inner warmth and the promise of returning light.
Correspondences
A simple Strawberry Moon gratitude ritual
- Place a small bowl of fresh strawberries or other ripe fruit on your altar beside a red candle on a fire-safe dish. Never leave a burning candle unattended.
- Set a rhodochrosite in front of the candle and scatter a few dried hibiscus petals around the bowl.
- Run a diffuser with sweet orange oil in a ventilated room. Essential oils are never swallowed; dilute before skin contact and keep them away from pets. Citrus oils can also make skin sensitive to sunlight.
- Light the candle and name, one at a time, the sweet things in your life right now. Eat a berry after each one.
- Share the remaining fruit with someone you love, or leave a little outdoors as an offering, and snuff the candle when you finish.
Journal prompts
