Where the name comes from
The Harvest Moon is not tied to a single month. It is the full moon closest to the autumn equinox, usually in September and sometimes in early October. The name has long been used in English-speaking farming communities on both sides of the Atlantic, and the Old Farmer's Almanac lists it alongside the traditional North American names. Around this time the moon rises only a little later each evening, so farmers had bright light after sunset for several nights in a row to bring in their crops.
Harvest Moon magick
In the Northern Hemisphere the Harvest Moon sits beside Mabon, the second harvest, when day and night are briefly equal. Its themes are balance, gratitude, abundance and sharing. This is a beautiful full moon for giving thanks, for weighing what in your life feels in or out of balance, and for preparing yourself for the darker half of the year. It supports prosperity work rooted in generosity, as well as practical magick for the home and family. Take time to notice what you have gathered, and decide what you will share, what you will store and what you will let go.
Southern Hemisphere: In the Southern Hemisphere this full moon falls near the spring equinox, so focus on balance, renewal and planting fresh intentions instead.
Correspondences
A simple Harvest Moon balance ritual
- Set a gold candle on a fire-safe dish between a bowl of apples or other seasonal food and an empty bowl. Never leave a burning candle unattended.
- Place a smoky quartz in front of the candle. Light a small bundle of sage to cleanse with smoke, opening a window for airflow.
- Add a few drops of cedarwood oil to a diffuser in a ventilated room. Essential oils are never swallowed; dilute before skin contact and keep them away from pets.
- Light the candle. Name something you are grateful for and move one apple into the empty bowl. Repeat until the bowls feel balanced.
- Snuff the candle, then share the apples with neighbors, friends or a food bank as a gesture of gratitude and abundance.
Journal prompts
- Where does my life feel in balance, and where does it feel lopsided?
- What have I gathered this year that I could share with others?
- What do I want to store away for the darker months ahead?
