Where the name comes from
Pink Moon is one of the traditional North American full moon names popularized by the Old Farmer's Almanac, which gathered them from Algonquin and other Native American sources and from colonial American usage. Despite the name, the moon itself does not turn pink. The name traditionally refers to creeping phlox, sometimes called moss pink, a wildflower that blooms early in spring across eastern North America. Other traditional names for this full moon include the Sprouting Grass Moon, the Egg Moon and the Fish Moon, each describing a sign of returning life in April. Together they paint a picture of a world turning green again.
Pink Moon magick
In the Northern Hemisphere the Pink Moon shines over blossoms, birdsong and longer evenings. Its themes are love, tenderness and growth that comes gently. This is a lovely full moon for self-love work, for mending your relationship with yourself, and for opening your heart a little wider to friends, family or a partner. It also supports emotional healing after a hard season. Spring growth is soft and easily bruised, so be kind to yourself and to others as you work. Choose intentions that invite warmth and care rather than force, and let them unfold at their own pace.
Southern Hemisphere: In the Southern Hemisphere this full moon falls in mid-autumn, so work with themes of comfort, gratitude and caring for the heart as the days shorten.
Correspondences
A simple Pink Moon self-love ritual
- Set a pink candle on a fire-safe dish and place a rose quartz in front of it. Scatter a few dried rose petals around the base. Never leave a burning candle unattended.
- Mix one drop of geranium oil into a teaspoon of carrier oil and dab a little on your wrists. Never swallow essential oils, and keep them away from pets.
- Light the candle and hold the rose quartz against your heart. Breathe slowly until you feel settled and warm.
- Speak three kind, true things about yourself out loud. If that feels awkward, write them down first and then read them back.
- Place the rose petals in a small dish by your bed for the next month, and snuff the candle when you feel complete.
