History and folklore
The geraniums used for oil are scented Pelargoniums from South Africa, brought to Europe in the 1600s. Victorian homes kept them on windowsills, and perfumers in France and Reunion distilled rose geranium as a more affordable stand-in for rose oil. In folklore, geraniums by the door were said to protect the home and keep out unwanted visitors. Witches today use the oil for love, harmony and emotional balance, often pairing it with rose.
