Where the name comes from
Flower Moon is one of the traditional North American full moon names popularized by the Old Farmer's Almanac, which gathered them from Algonquin and other Native American sources and from colonial American usage. The name reflects the abundance of flowers blooming across North America in May. Other traditional names for this full moon include the Planting Moon, since this was the season to put crops in the ground, and the Milk Moon, a name found in some European and colonial sources. All of these names celebrate the same moment: the land fully awake, fertile and generous, with growth visible everywhere you look.
Flower Moon magick
In the Northern Hemisphere the Flower Moon follows Beltane, the festival of fertility, passion and life in full bloom. Its themes are creativity, beauty, abundance and pleasure. This is a wonderful full moon for creative projects, for blessing your garden, for love and friendship, and for celebrating how far you have come since winter. It also supports prosperity work that is rooted in growth rather than grasping. Flowers do not strain to bloom; they open when conditions are right. Use this moon to create the right conditions in your life, then enjoy what blossoms without trying to control it.
Southern Hemisphere: In the Southern Hemisphere this full moon comes in late autumn, so focus on rest, gathering resources and turning inward before winter.
Correspondences
A simple Flower Moon blessing ritual
- Gather a few fresh flowers from a garden or shop, or a sprig of lilac if it is blooming, and arrange them in water on your altar.
- Set a yellow candle on a fire-safe dish beside the flowers and place a green aventurine in front of it. Never leave a burning candle unattended.
- Add a few drops of ylang ylang oil to a diffuser in a ventilated room. Essential oils are never swallowed; dilute before skin contact and keep them away from pets.
- Light the candle and name one creative project or dream you want to bring into bloom. Hold the aventurine as you picture it flourishing.
- Thank the season for its beauty. Snuff the candle, then carry the aventurine with you while you work on that project this month.
