Where the name comes from
Wolf Moon is one of the traditional North American full moon names popularized by the Old Farmer's Almanac, which gathered them from Algonquin and other Native American sources and from colonial American usage. In folklore the name is tied to the sound of wolves howling in the deep cold of January, when food was scarce and the nights were long. Treat that as a traditional explanation rather than documented history. You may also see this full moon called the Old Moon or the Ice Moon, names that point to the same idea: the hardest, quietest stretch of winter, when everyone stays close to home.
Wolf Moon magick
In the Northern Hemisphere the Wolf Moon rises over a world that is cold, dark and resting. Its themes are protection, endurance and belonging. Think of the wolf as a teacher of the pack: strong alone, stronger together. This is a good full moon to strengthen the wards around your home, to honor the people who carry you through hard seasons, and to set clear intentions for the year ahead now that the noise of the holidays has passed. It also suits work on inner strength and trusting your instincts. Keep your magick simple and steady. Winter magick is about tending a small, reliable flame rather than building a bonfire.

Correspondences
A simple Wolf Moon protection ritual
- Set a white candle on a fire-safe dish near a window where the moonlight can reach it. Never leave a burning candle unattended.
- Place a garnet beside the candle and scatter a pinch of dried thyme around its base as a small circle of protection.
- Light a stick or cone of frankincense, open a window a little for airflow, and let the smoke drift through the room as you breathe slowly.
- Light the candle and name, out loud or silently, the people who form your pack. Ask that each of them be kept safe and strong this year.
- Hold the garnet and picture a ring of steady light around your home. When you feel finished, snuff the candle and keep the stone by your door.
