Where the name comes from
Sturgeon Moon is one of the traditional North American full moon names popularized by the Old Farmer's Almanac, which gathered them from Algonquin and other Native American sources and from colonial American usage. The name traditionally refers to the large sturgeon fish that were plentiful and easier to catch in the Great Lakes and other waters during late summer. Other traditional names for this full moon include the Green Corn Moon and the Grain Moon, both pointing to the first crops coming ready in August. Together these names describe a season of plenty, when both water and land were generous to those who worked them.
Sturgeon Moon magick
In the Northern Hemisphere the Sturgeon Moon follows Lughnasadh, the first harvest festival. Its themes are abundance, gratitude, endurance and wisdom. The sturgeon is an ancient, long-lived fish, so this full moon is a good time to honor patience and the long view, and to recognize how slow, steady effort has paid off. It supports prosperity work grounded in thanks, emotional healing through water magick, and reflection on what you have learned this year. Take stock of your first harvest, however small. Gratitude for what has already arrived makes room for what is still growing.
Southern Hemisphere: In the Southern Hemisphere this falls in late winter, so focus on patience, cleansing and preparing for the first signs of spring.
Correspondences
A simple Sturgeon Moon water blessing
- Fill a clear glass bowl with water and set it where the moonlight can reach it. Place an aquamarine beside the bowl rather than in the water.
- Set a blue candle on a fire-safe dish next to the bowl and lay a few fresh basil leaves around it. Never leave a burning candle unattended.
- Light a cone of myrrh incense, open a window for airflow, and let your breath slow as you watch the moon reflected in the water.
- Light the candle and name three things this year has given you. For each one, touch the surface of the water and say thank you.
- Snuff the candle. In the morning, pour the water onto a plant or the earth as an offering of gratitude.
