History and folklore

Patchouli comes from Southeast Asia, where its dried leaves were traditionally packed among fine fabrics and shawls to keep moths away. When these goods reached Victorian Europe, the scent itself became a sign of luxury, and buyers learned to sniff for it to know the cloth was genuine. In the twentieth century it became famous again as a perfume. In modern magick its rich, earthy fragrance is linked to the earth element, grounding, steady abundance and sensual love.
