History and folklore
The idea of a threefold goddess appears in the ancient world, as with the Greek Hecate. The poet Robert Graves popularized the Maiden, Mother and Crone in the 1940s, and modern Wicca drew the triple moon symbol from it. The waxing crescent is the Maiden, the full moon the Mother and the waning crescent the Crone, together showing the whole cycle of life.
