History and folklore
Clary sage is a tall Mediterranean sage with pale lilac blossoms. Its folk name, clear eye, comes from an old European practice of using its seeds to clear grit from the eyes. Medieval brewers sometimes used it in place of hops, and folklore says it could make drinkers giddy. In modern witchcraft it is linked to the Moon and to dreams, and practitioners use its oil to encourage intuition, vivid dreaming and a calmer, more receptive mind.
